The bathroom is where most falls happen, and it’s also the room adult children worry about most when a parent lives alone. The good news: you don’t need a contractor or a demo weekend to make it dramatically safer. Most of what actually prevents falls, grab bars, non-slip surfaces, and a well-lit path, can be done in a single weekend for well under $150.
Here’s how to spend it.
Saturday Morning: The No-Drill Wins (1 hour, ~$60)
Start here, no tools, no wall damage, and you’ll see the difference immediately.
- A suction grab bar at the tub or shower entry. The TAILI Suction Grab Bar (2-pack) holds up to 300+ lbs on smooth tile or fiberglass, no drilling, and can be repositioned if it’s not quite in the right spot. It’s not a permanent fix, but it’s a same-day one.
- A non-slip bath mat inside the tub or shower. Look for one with strong suction on the bottom and a textured, quick-dry top, not the thin dollar-store kind. Browse non-slip bath mats for seniors on Amazon.
- A motion-sensor night light plugged in along the path from the bedroom to the bathroom. Most nighttime falls happen because someone was navigating in the dark.
Saturday Afternoon: The Toilet (30 minutes, ~$50)
Standing up and sitting down is one of the highest-risk movements in the bathroom, and it’s also one of the easiest to fix. A Carex Toilet Safety Rail clamps around the existing toilet bowl, no tools, no drilling, and gives sturdy armrests on both sides. It comes off just as easily if you ever need to move it. Budget about 30 minutes to unbox and adjust it to the right height.
Sunday: The Permanent Grab Bar (2 hours, ~$40)
If you’re comfortable with a drill, this is the single most effective upgrade you can make, a permanently wall-mounted grab bar rated for real weight, not just a towel bar someone will grab in an emergency (towel bars are not rated to hold body weight and are a common cause of falls when people lean on them).
The Moen Home Care 24-Inch Grab Bar is rated to 500 lbs and mounts with concealed screws into wall studs or drywall anchors. Mount it at a diagonal inside the shower, roughly waist height on the end closest to the entry, angled up toward the back wall, which is the position occupational therapists recommend for getting in, out, and standing back up.
No stud in the right spot? SecureMount anchors let you install a rated grab bar anywhere on the wall without hitting a stud, worth searching for if your bathroom’s framing doesn’t line up with where you need the bar.
The Weekend Checklist
- Suction grab bar at tub/shower entry
- Non-slip bath mat inside the tub or shower
- Motion-sensor night light in the hallway path
- Toilet safety rail
- Permanently mounted grab bar, diagonal, waist height
Total cost: roughly $130 to $150 for all five, and every one of them is something you can undo or reposition later if needs change. You don’t have to do it all in one weekend, either, even just the no-drill items on Saturday morning make a real difference by Saturday night.
